Project Overview

The City of Burnsville has databases that are sources of data for applications such as OpenGov for permits and inspections, New World for HR/payroll and utility billing, and Datafi built upon ArcGIS. Those applications are essential to the effective running of the city.

The City of Burnsville asked SCS to audit the city’s database environment to identify areas of improvement in respect to performance and stability. In addition, SCS helped the City of Burnsville to configure their new high availability environment and build a data mart for their analytics.

Goals

Identify areas of improvement in the SQL Server database environment.

Help build the data mart used for analytics in the City of Burnsville.

Build a new high availability environment for all the application databases.

Approach

Performed a thorough review of the database environment in the City of Burnsville and produced an extensive document explaining database best practices and suggested improvements.

Worked with the City of Burnsville’s data mart vendor to configure the data environment to host the data mart.

Assisted with replacing an older SQL Server that needed to be replaced with a more modern version. Then configured Always On Availability Groups on the new server.

Mentored the City of Burnsville staff by answering questions and explaining features as requested.
